Plitvice Lakes from Split: guided with tickets, or self-guided with the boat?
Updated October 10, 2026 · 5 min read
Almost every Plitvice trip from Split is a 12-hour day, so the clock will not separate them. What separates them is who walks you through the park and what is paid for in advance. Our pick for most visitors is the guided tour with entry tickets at €89. If you would rather wander alone, the self-guided day tour with a boat ride costs €50, a clear saving, and has the same 4.9 stars.
Four options side by side
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guided tour with entry tickets | 12 hours | €89 | 4.9 (3,522) | First-timers who want explanations and nothing to buy at the gate |
| Self-guided day tour with boat ride | 12 hours | €50 | 4.9 (1,975) | People who dislike following a flag |
| Guided group tour from Split, Trogir or Omiš | 12 hours | €50 | 4.6 (393) | Guided company at the lower price |
| Transfer to Zagreb with Plitvice tickets | 11–12 hours | €169 | 4.6 (82) | Anyone whose next bed is in Zagreb |
What the guide buys you
Of the three round trips, the €89 tour is the only one whose title promises entry tickets, and it is described as a guided walk through the forests and past the cascades, with a boat across the 16 lakes. With 3,522 reviews it is also the best-tested of the four, and a guide means nobody in your group has to decide which way to walk.

Going without a guide
The self-guided version brings you to the park by coach and puts you on a boat through the falls, then leaves the route to you. That suits you if you already know you will stop every few minutes to photograph the water. It is the weaker choice for anyone who wants the history and geology explained, since nobody in the group will do it.

The cheaper guided tour
The group tour leaves from Split, Trogir or Omiš, so pick-up from the neighbouring towns is part of the format. It costs the same €50 as the self-guided tour, but its 4.6 rating from 393 reviews is lower than the 4.9 of the two bigger offers. The title does not mention tickets, so confirm what the price covers before you assume the gate is paid.
When Zagreb is the destination
The transfer does not bring you back to Split. It carries you from Split to Zagreb with a licensed guide and Plitvice tickets in between. That makes sense if you are heading to the capital anyway and want to cross the park on the way, and it is poor value otherwise: at €169 you are paying for a one-way journey.

Who should skip Plitvice from Split
Twelve hours is a long day for small children and for anyone who gets queasy in coaches. If you have only a single free day and would rather swim, the Krka falls from Split fit into nine hours; we compare those in our national park tours.
Our recommendation
Book the guided tour with entry tickets unless you are certain you want to walk unaccompanied. The €39 it adds to the self-guided price buys a guide and a larger pool of reviews: 3,522 against 1,975.
