Diocletian’s Palace: which walking tour, and is the VR film an alternative?
Updated October 10, 2026 · 5 min read
Book the small-group guided tour of the palace if you want one tour that covers the Golden Gate, the palace and the statue of Gregory of Nin: €14.99, 4.9 stars from 5,748 reviews. For a quick orientation on your first morning, the 50-minute walking tour costs €10.50. The other two are for specific tastes, and we explain which below.
The four options at a glance
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | Character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small-group guided tour | 1.5–6 hours | €14.99 | 4.9 (5,748) | Local guide, Golden Gate, Gregory of Nin |
| 50-minute walking tour | 50 minutes | €10.50 | 4.7 (1,033) | Riva, palace, St. Domnius cathedral |
| Game of Thrones tour with palace cellar | 2 hours | €35 | 4.7 (602) | Filming locations and the cellar |
| Virtual reality film | not stated | €13 | 4.5 (352) | The palace as it stood in 305 A.D. |
Why the small-group tour comes first
The palace guide has the best score of the four and by far the biggest review count, and its range of 1.5 to 6 hours indicates that it can be a short walk or a long one. At under €15 it is also close to the cheapest. A local guide walks you from the Golden Gate to the statue of Gregory of Nin, which is more ground than the shorter tours name.

Fifty minutes is a taster, not a tour
The 50-minute tour takes in the Riva promenade, the palace, the Cathedral of St. Domnius and a viewpoint. That is a compressed orientation, and it is also the cheapest at €10.50. Take it if your only free slot is short, and do not expect depth.
For fans of the series
The Game of Thrones tour lasts 2 hours and goes into the palace cellar, which the other walks do not mention. It costs €35, over twice the price of the standard walk, so it is for people who know the series. If you have never watched it, the money is better spent elsewhere.

The film is not a guided tour
The virtual reality film is the only option without a guide. You watch the palace as it was in 305 A.D., with commentary in your own language. It answers the question a walk through the stone corridors cannot, which is what the whole complex looked like. It does not replace a walk, because you will not see the streets, and its 4.5 stars on 352 reviews are the lowest of the group. See it after a walking tour, not instead of one.

The three walking tours cost between €10.50 and €35, but the bigger difference is time: what you are really choosing is how much of your day it takes, from 50 minutes to as long as six hours.
Our recommendation
For a first visit, take the small-group guided tour. More walking options and entry tickets are collected under Diocletian’s Palace tours.
